I began my career in veterinary surgery as an Instrument Technician for a prominent small animal surgeon in Southern California. Soon after learning how to process their surgical instruments, I began ordering sterile supplies. My next role in my career began when I was recruited by a Specialty Veterinary Hospital to set up their three O.R.s and sterile processing department with equipment, instruments, and sterile supply. My position became permanent when I was asked to stay on as their O.R. Supervisor. In this role I began to hire and train Instrument Techs for our surgery department. Eager to enhance my role even further in surgery, I participated in educational programs including a three-day course in infection control put on by the CDC. That course made me realize the importance of having infection control protocols in place, which would benefit the veterinary community in reducing hospital associated infections (HAIs). Wanting the experience and knowledge to write these protocols, I expanded my skillset to include formal education in human medicine as both a Surgical Scrub Technician and Instrument Technician. In doing so, I became professionally recognized as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) and later a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST). Since then, I have been hired in the human healthcare field by a level II trauma hospital as a Central Service Technician. In this role I am exposed to all forms of the sterilization process, including working on my certification as a Certified Endoscope Preprocessor (CER).
Functioning well under pressure, I can produce high-quality work in short periods of time. I exhibit analytical skills to solve problems and move forward. I pride myself on personal integrity and honesty, working with a surgical conscience. Possessing strong interpersonal skills I interact respectfully, and quite enjoy working with a wide variety of people with diverse backgrounds.
My greatest interests lie in Infection-control and practicing techniques to prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). I am confident that having protocols that aide in the prevention of HAIs in the community of all small animal hospitals will drive changes in veterinary medicine. I take great satisfaction in knowing my efforts are part of every surgical procedure and patient outcome.
